Hayden Panettiere's Death Ruled Accident; Cause Was Toxic Effects of Fentanyl and Other Drugs

Hayden Panettiere's death on August 16 has been ruled an accident caused by the toxic effects of fentanyl and several other drugs, the Greenville County Coroner's Office confirmed Tuesday. The coroner's official statement listed the substances found in her system as fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam (sold as Xanax), methocarbamol, and quetiapine. The 36-year-old actress, known for roles in Heroes and Nashville, was found unresponsive at an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina, where she had been temporarily staying.

The coroner's office said an autopsy by a board-certified forensic pathologist found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death. Emergency responders had initiated advanced cardiac life support measures after a 911 call at approximately 1:51 p.m., but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m. The Greenville Police Department said its independent investigation remains open.

"Our detectives will continue to follow leads and gather information as we work toward resolving this case," the department said in a statement. Panettiere had been open about her long struggles with substance abuse, including an addiction to opioids and alcohol. In a 2022 interview with People, she said, "As I got older, the drugs and alcohol became something I almost couldn't live without."

She also spoke about using substances to cope with postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter Kaya. Just months before her death, she published a memoir discussing her addiction and mental health issues. The Associated Press reported that Panettiere had been released from a drug rehabilitation facility in Malibu, California, weeks before her death, citing a coroner's report.

The Drug Enforcement Administration has reportedly joined the investigation, though the agency declined to comment on specific cases. Panettiere's ex-boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother Zach were present when emergency services arrived, according to a police report. Zach Hickerson later told TMZ that Brian administered Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses.

The Phoenix Center, a Greenville recovery organization, noted that even a small amount of fentanyl can be dangerous. "Fentanyl can be really dangerous because it's hard to detect often times visually and just a small amount of fentanyl can lead to an overdose or accidental overdose," said Sophie Finnell, the center's community engagement and fundraising liaison.
