Taylor Swift to receive inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors

Taylor Swift has spent the past several years building one of the most distinctive directorial catalogs in popular music, moving from co-directing her 2010 video for "Mine" to fully self-directing projects like "All Too Well: The Short Film" and the recent "The Fate of Ophelia." On Monday, CBS and MTV announced that Swift will receive the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards. The new award recognizes "groundbreaking music artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video and advanced the art of visual storytelling," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The honor will be presented during the VMAs on Sunday, September 27, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. It marks the first time the show has taken place in the city in nearly a decade, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Snoop Dogg will host the ceremony, which airs live from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. ET on CBS with a simulcast on MTV and streaming on Paramount+ in the U.S.

Swift enters the ceremony as the second most nominated artist with nine nominations, behind Madonna's 11, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Her nominations include artist of the year and video of the year for "The Fate of Ophelia." The Artist Director Honors adds to Swift's record as the most-awarded act in VMAs history.

She has won four VMAs for best direction, with nominations for "The Man," "Cardigan," "Willow," "All Too Well: The Short Film," "Anti-Hero," "Fortnight (feat. Post Malone)," and "Opalite," according to Billboard. Her directing credits also include "Bejeweled," "Lavender Haze," "Karma (feat. Ice Spice)," "I Can See You (Taylor's Version) (From The Vault)," and "The Fate of Ophelia." The new award is described by MTV as celebrating "a sustained and influential body of work from artists who have pushed creative boundaries and developed a clear directorial voice," according to Rolling Stone.

Swift's solo directorial debut came in 2020 with the video for "The Man," which won best direction at that year's VMAs, Billboard reported. Other performers set for the ceremony include Lisa, Shaboozey, Raye, Sienna Spiro, GENER8ION, Gunna, and Yung Lean, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Madonna will open the show in her first VMAs performance in 23 years.

Nirvana will receive the Video Vanguard Award, though details on who will accept on the band's behalf have not been announced.
