Filming on “The Batman Part II” has been temporarily paused while director Matt Reeves attends to a family matter, Warner Bros. and DC Studios confirmed on Monday. “Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter,” a DC Studios spokesperson said. The sequel to Reeves’ 2022 “The Batman” began filming in London in June after a development process that saw its start date pushed multiple times while Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin worked on the script, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film is currently scheduled for release on Feb. 18, 2028. Robert Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne/Batman, with Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Wright, Jayme Lawson, and Gil Perez-Abraham also reprising roles from the first film, according to the Los Angeles Times. New additions include Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Sebastian Koch, and Brian Tyree Henry.

The story is expected to take place after the events of the 2024 HBO series “The Penguin,” which followed “The Batman.” The production pause arrives as David Ellison’s Skydance is expected to complete its $111-billion merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, DC Studios’ parent company, on Tuesday, the Los Angeles Times reported. DC chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran are among the executives staying on under the new ownership, while Warner Bros. film heads Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy are leaving, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Reeves’ first “Batman” film grossed $770.3 million globally and launched the spinoff series “The Penguin” starring Colin Farrell. The filmmaker also produced DC’s upcoming “Clayface” movie, which opens Oct. 23. In July, Reeves shared a brief clip of test footage from “The Batman Part II” that offered the first look at Pattinson in a new Batsuit as snow fell around him, the Los Angeles Times noted.

“Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.” It is too early to say whether the pause will affect that date, Deadline sources said.
