Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan Release 'Expectations' Remix With David Byrne-Starring Video
The Grammy winners' first collaboration arrives with a retro game-show visual hosted by the Talking Heads frontman.

Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan released their first-ever collaboration on Thursday, a remix of "Expectations" from Rodrigo's Billboard 200-topping third album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love. The track arrived alongside a music video in which the two pop stars compete on vintage game shows hosted by Talking Heads frontman David Byrne, according to Billboard and Variety.
The video, directed by Bardia Zeinali, casts Byrne as fictional emcee Johnny Johnson and features campy takes on Family Feud and Hollywood Squares. Roan contributes an entirely new verse to the song, shifting the lyrics to address an unimpressive female suitor instead of the series of underwhelming men Rodrigo sings about. Producer Dan Nigro, who has worked with both artists for years, also makes a cameo.
"Past mistakes are just new information," the two Grammy winners sing on the chorus. "These days, I've got expectations."
The release was teased two days earlier, when Rodrigo shared an audio snippet of Roan saying, "Oh, Olivia does remixes now." Rodrigo also posted the cover art, shot by Phoenix Johnson, showing the pair posing on a retro convertible in Cyndi Lauper-esque 1980s outfits.
The collaboration marks a rare move for Rodrigo, whose only previous duet on an official release was with Robert Smith on "What's Wrong With Me" from the same album. For Roan, it is her first feature on another artist's track, according to Billboard.
The two have a long history: Roan opened for Rodrigo on the Sour Tour in 2022 and the Guts World Tour in 2024, and they performed "Hot to Go!" together in Los Angeles. In August, Roan played Rodrigo's inaugural Daisy Chain Fields festival, which raised $20 million for charities supporting women and girls.
“"Chappell is the most incredible person and the most inspiring artist and I am so lucky to be able to learn from her and call her a friend."”

Rodrigo's caption also thanked producer Dan Nigro, co-writer Amy Allen, and director Bardia Zeinali. Roan responded in her own post, writing that she hadn't released a song in a long time and that the collaboration made her "excited to create and be a pop girl again."
"Expectations" originally debuted at No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 when the album arrived in June. The album itself shattered streaming records, becoming the most-streamed album in a single day in 2026 by a female artist, according to ABC News.
