Microsoft has officially announced a disc-to-digital program for Xbox, allowing owners of physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X games to claim a digital entitlement for those titles. The feature will enter testing for Xbox Insiders on August 31, with a broader rollout expected later, according to an Xbox Wire post cited by Game Informer and Engadget.

To use the feature, players insert a supported disc into their console and launch the game. The system then ties a digital license to that specific disc, meaning the entitlement moves with the physical copy if the disc is sold or loaned to another account. Microsoft confirmed in the announcement that "thousands" of titles will be supported at launch, including "most" disc-based Xbox One and Series X games, with more added over time.

Today we are introducing a feature that brings the benefits of digital to physical discs, giving players more flexibility in how they access and play supported games across the XBOX ecosystem.

The digital copies will support Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where available, according to Microsoft. That means players can stream eligible games to other devices and, for Play Anywhere titles, access them on PC. However, Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs are excluded from the program, as The Verge first reported in July based on internal testing documentation.

The announcement comes amid broader industry shifts away from physical media. Sony said it will stop producing disc-based games after January 2028, and Microsoft has not confirmed whether its next-generation console, codenamed Project Helix, will include a disc drive. In an interview with the BBC, Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma said the new feature gives players choice: "I know players love physical media, and I know there's a lot of benefits in digital media, and I want to make sure people have a choice."

Sharma also noted that the feature could preserve access to older games on future hardware. "We've long pioneered backwards compatibility and so you'll continue to see that as we go forward in the generations," she told the BBC. She declined to say whether Project Helix will have a disc drive, saying the company must balance "efficiency and affordability alongside performance."

The disc-to-digital program does not eliminate the physical disc. Players can continue using the disc as before, and the digital entitlement is lost if the disc is transferred to another account. Microsoft has not said when the feature will leave Insider testing and become available to all Xbox owners.
