Rupert Grint to play adult Ron Weasley in Broadway's 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child'

Rupert Grint first played Ron Weasley at age 11, and the role has followed him through eight films and more than two decades of public life. On Aug. 26, he confirmed that he will return to the character once more, this time on a Broadway stage. Grint will join the New York production of "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" on Feb. 2, 2027, for a 17-week engagement that runs through May 30, according to the show's official cast announcement.

He will play the adult Ron Weasley, a version of the character he has never portrayed on stage. "Dusting off the old robes," Grint wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of the show's playbill. "New York - see you all in February."

In a statement released the same day, Grint described the decision as "full-circle" and tied it to his own life as a father. "Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old and I can't wait to meet him again in this stage of life," he said. "There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron's shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new."

The casting follows a similar move by Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in the films and has been appearing as the adult Draco in the Broadway production since November 2025. Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender said Grint's return "creates a powerful bridge between the story audiences first fell in love with and the story of family, legacy and the passage of time that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child carries forward." Grint made his Broadway debut in 2014 in "It's Only a Play" opposite Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick.

His recent screen credits include M. Night Shyamalan's "Knock at the Cabin" and the horror film "Nightborn." The play is set 19 years after the events of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" and centers on Harry's son Albus. Grint is the only member of the original film trio to return to the role on stage.
