Olivia Rodrigo brings out Stevie Nicks, Alanis Morissette and Sarah McLachlan at Daisy Chain Fields

Olivia Rodrigo conceived Daisy Chain Fields as a direct descendant of Lilith Fair, the touring festival Sarah McLachlan founded in 1997 to put women at the center of a major concert bill. That lineage became literal on Saturday night, August 29, when Rodrigo's headlining set at Great Park in Irvine, California, turned into a series of duets with the artists who shaped her: McLachlan, Alanis Morissette, and Stevie Nicks.

McLachlan was the first guest. Before they sang together, Rodrigo told the crowd that without Lilith Fair, "there would be no Daisy Chain," according to NME. The pair performed McLachlan's "Building a Mystery" and "Angel," dedicating the latter to Dolly Parton, who died on August 25 at age 80 after a brief battle with cancer.

Morissette then joined Rodrigo for "Ironic," the 1996 hit from Jagged Little Pill. Rolling Stone notes that Morissette filled in for Karen O after the Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer withdrew from the festival. The two had first performed together in May 2022 at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles during Rodrigo's Sour tour.

Nicks closed the night with Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide." After the song, Nicks spoke about the connection she feels with Rodrigo. "She reminds me of me, when I was her age a hundred years ago," Nicks said, according to Pitchfork. "And I'm somewhat awestruck that she could do all this. Because it's so hard, you have no idea, putting this together with all of these people. And she's done it, with this grace."

Rodrigo had hinted at the possibility of a Nicks collaboration weeks earlier. Asked which song she hoped to perform at the festival, she replied, "'Landslide,' maybe? We'll see. Fingers crossed," NME reported.

The festival also served as the live debut for "Serena Joy," a new Rodrigo song inspired by The Handmaid's Tale. The track was released on streaming platforms this week after an initial run of 500 CDs sold only at a record store near the festival site.

Daisy Chain Fields' inaugural lineup included Chappell Roan, Doechii, Mitski, Bikini Kill, The Breeders, Garbage, Santigold, and others. All participating artists waived their performance fees, and net proceeds support nonprofits advocating for women and girls. Pitchfork reports the festival raised $20 million: $10 million from ticket sales and another $10 million through a donation match from philanthropist Melinda Gates.

Rodrigo released her third album, You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love, in June. She begins her Unraveled world tour next month, with support from Wolf Alice, The Last Dinner Party, Devon Again, Grace Ives, and Die Spitz.
