Nirvana to Receive 2026 MTV Video Vanguard Award, First Band Honored Since 2003

MTV made the announcement on September 9, the 34th anniversary of Nirvana's instrument-smashing performance of "Lithium" at the 1992 VMAs, according to Rolling Stone. At that show, Kurt Cobain teased the opening chords of the then-unreleased In Utero song "Rape Me" to irritate network censors, while Krist Novoselic threw his bass in the air and had it land on his face.

The Video Vanguard Award, the VMAs' top career prize, will go to Nirvana during the ceremony on Sunday, September 27, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, MTV said Wednesday. The trio will be the first band to receive the honor since Duran Duran in 2003, and the first band to receive it after disbanding since The Beatles in 1964, according to Billboard.

MTV noted in its Instagram announcement that "this day in 1992, Nirvana took to the VMAs stage for the first time — shaping music, culture and MTV forever," Billboard reported. The network did not say who would accept the award on the band's behalf. Nirvana consisted of Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl; Cobain died by suicide on April 5, 1994.

Nirvana is the ninth band to receive the Video Vanguard Award, following acts including The Beatles, Bon Jovi, Guns N' Roses, The Rolling Stones, R.E.M., Beastie Boys, U2 and Duran Duran, according to Billboard. The band won best alternative video at the VMAs three years running, with "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in 1992, "In Bloom" in 1993 and "Heart-Shaped Box" in 1994.

The 2026 VMAs will broadcast live coast-to-coast on CBS and simulcast on MTV, with streaming on Paramount+ Premium in the U.S. and global availability the next day, according to Billboard and The Hollywood Reporter. Nominees were announced on August 18; Madonna leads with 11 nominations, followed by Taylor Swift with nine.

Nirvana's breakout album Nevermind has sold more than 30 million copies, and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" has racked up nearly 3.1 billion streams on Spotify, The Hollywood Reporter reported. The band's 1993 MTV Unplugged episode is touted as the highlight of the series and reportedly stands as its most-watched episode.
