Netflix Confirms 'The Inbetweeners 3' in Production With Original Cast

Netflix confirmed on Monday that The Inbetweeners 3 is now in production in the U.K., with the original lead cast reprising their roles. Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison and Joe Thomas will return as Will McKenzie, Jay Cartwright, Neil Sutherland and Simon Cooper, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film is a continuation of the Channel 4 sitcom that aired from 2008 to 2010 and its two record-breaking spin-off movies.

Creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris are back to write and direct the feature, which Netflix described as "a continuation of the hugely popular sitcom and its two record-breaking films." Production began on Monday, the streamer said. Beesley and Morris issued a statement through Netflix: "It's been super-fun hanging out with our friends again, and we're going to work hard every week to ensure there are no problemos making this new film for humans."

The announcement ends months of speculation about a revival. Last October, Morris and Beesley's production company Fudge Park signed an agreement with distributor Banijay U.K. to "unlock the rights and the potential to bring The Inbetweeners back for new audiences across a range of platforms including film, TV and stage," according to Wikipedia. Netflix is now officially the film's home.

The original series followed the misadventures of four suburban teenagers at the fictional Rudge Park Comprehensive as they navigated school life, friendship and failed sexual encounters. It ran for three seasons on E4 and won the Audience Award at the 2010 British Academy Television Awards, the only category voted for by the public. The first film, released in 2011, set a record for the biggest opening weekend for a U.K. comedy at the time and grossed £65.1 million at the box office. The 2014 sequel grossed £46.6 million.

Netflix released a teaser video alongside the announcement. It shows the four characters returning to Simon's yellow Fiat Cinquecento, with the car initially failing to start before they drive out of what looks like a storage unit. The rear windscreen carries the number three, and the trailer ends with the words "Now in production."

The film is produced by Claire Jones alongside Banijay's Patrick Holland and Fudge Park Productions' Mark Lesbirel. Executive producers include Caroline Levy, Caroline Leddy, Phil Gilbert, Suzanne Knight, Tom Jordan, Farhana Bhula for Film4, Morris and Beesley. No release date has been announced, and it is not yet known whether Emily Atack will return as Charlotte Hinchcliffe or Emily Head as Carli D'Amato.

The Inbetweeners has gained new fans in recent years as clips from the series found a second life on social media. The show was nominated for Best Situation Comedy at BAFTA in 2009 and 2010. A 2019 retrospective special, Fwends Reunited, was poorly received, leading to a public apology from James Buckley.
