Harry Styles jokes about Taylor Swift's MSG wedding during residency show

Harry Styles has spent the summer watching his Madison Square Garden residency become a rolling referendum on his own past. The 30-show run, which opened Aug. 26 and continues through Halloween, marks his first live dates since 2023 and his only U.S. tour stops of the year. On Saturday night, the arena's recent history as a wedding venue gave him an opening he could not resist.

Toward the end of his third Garden show, Styles addressed the crowd with a line that blended civic pride and personal history. "We're at Madison Square Garden, home of the world champion New York Knicks!" he said, before adding, "And they also do weddings."

The joke referenced Taylor Swift's July 3 wedding to Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, which took place at the same arena. Styles and Swift dated from November 2012 to January 2013, and their relationship is widely understood to have inspired Swift's 2014 hit "Style."

According to Billboard, the line drew loud cheers from the audience. The moment landed three days into a residency that has already drawn outsized attention: Ticketmaster reported 11.5 million presale registrations in January, the highest volume ever recorded for an artist presale.

Styles reportedly received an invitation to the Swift-Kelce wedding but did not attend. Sources told Variety at the time that he was "currently on tour and will not make it to MSG." His fiancée, Zoë Kravitz, went to the ceremony without him. That same night, Styles was performing the London leg of his Together, Together tour at Wembley Stadium, where fan footage captured him singing "Two Ghosts," long rumored to be his response to "Style."

The residency itself has been a study in contrasts. Opening night carried its own emotional weight, as Styles overhauled his usual setlist and paused late in the set to honor Dolly Parton, who had died the day before. "I just wanna give a proper thank you to all the musicians who have inspired me over the years," he told the crowd. "Dolly, we love you. Thank you so much."

Saturday's shout-out was not the first time Styles has acknowledged the wedding from the stage. During his July 3 Wembley show, he performed "Two Ghosts," which includes the lines "Same lips red, same eyes blue / Same white shirt, couple more tattoos." The song has long been interpreted as his response to Swift's "Style."

The wedding joke arrives as Styles promotes his new album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally, released in March. The residency serves as the sole set of U.S. stops on his Together, Together tour, and the setlist has been completely overhauled from his previous run, a departure from the largely unchanged show he played across 33 prior tour dates.
