Dolly Parton becomes No. 1 artist on U.S. Spotify a day after her death

The spike followed the announcement of her death on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at age 80. According to early data provided by Luminate and cited by Billboard, Parton's U.S. on-demand streams jumped from just over 1.2 million on Aug. 18 to 26.3 million on the day of her death, a gain of 2,056%. That total was the second-highest daily U.S. streaming count for any artist that day, ahead of Morgan Wallen, Taylor Swift and Bad Bunny, and behind only Drake.

Spotify figures reported by Variety put the global increase at over 1,260% compared with the prior seven-day daily average, and 2,320% in the United States. "Jolene" climbed 630% globally and 1,225% in the U.S. The song reached No. 1 on the global Spotify chart for the first time, with 4.72 million streams, according to Pop Base.

By Aug. 26, Parton's Spotify catalog had accumulated approximately 5.93 billion streams across 742 tracks, according to data cited by Cape Times. That catalog includes "Jolene" with about 953 million streams, "9 to 5" with roughly 896 million, and the Kenny Rogers duet "Islands in the Stream" with around 615 million. Billboard noted that the Aug. 25 numbers were recorded with news of Parton's death spreading more than halfway through the tracking day, suggesting the totals could rise further once a full day of listening was captured.

The streaming surge extended across her catalog, from the 1973 classic "Jolene" to the 1980 title song from 9 to 5, which became Parton's first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her collaboration with Beyoncé on "TYRANT" from Cowboy Carter had approximately 128 million streams, and the Galantis and Mr. Probz collaboration "Faith" had about 148 million, according to Cape Times.
